Step #1: Get data at the NYC Office of City Planning

Scroll down to 2018 > Social > Neighborhood Tabulation Area. Download the excel spreadsheet. Open it in Excel, or go to Google Drive > New Spreedsheet and upload there.

Step #2: Identify data you want. We are looking for the foreign born population. So, we go to the Dictionary tab and find the coded acronym, which in this case is Fb1.

Step #3: Go back to the first sheet and do a search for “Fb1”. Click on the top of that column and Command C to copy. Click on the + to add a new tab and paste that in the fourth column.

Step #4: Select the first three columns by clicking at the top of each and hold down the Shift key. Command C to copy. Return to your new sheet and paste those columns in the first three rows.

Step #5: Change the FBI to “Foreign Born.” Datawrapper was having problems with the numbers when I did this exercise, so just to be sure, click on the FB1 column. Go to Format > Cells > Number and uncheck the Show “,” with 10,000. With Google, select the column, then 123 and select “Number.” In Excel, go to Save as and select CSV. It will tell you that not everything will be saved in this format and that is fine. For Google, go to Download > Save as CSV current sheeet.

Step #6: Log into Datawrapper. https://www.datawrapper.de/ and then New Map > Choropleth. Write New York City in the box that reads “What type of map do you want to create?” Select Neighborhood Tabulation Areas. Click on Proceed. It will tell you it will combine either name or neighborhood code.

Step #7: Click on the button in the lower left hand corner that says “Import Your Data.” Click on Alternatively, click here to upload a CSV-file. And upload your CSV file. Confirm that Datawrapper matched the Neighborhood code accurately (It will be blue.) Next. Please select which column in your dataset contains “Values“. Select the Foreign Born column and Next.

Step #8: Click on Visualize. Make sure that the “Select column” has the correct column to visualize, the Foreign Born.

Step #9: You can play around with the legend. You can try “steps” and you can also select different labels such as “range.”

Step #10: Go to Annotate. Give it a title. “Foreign Born New Yorkers by Neighborhood”

Step #11: Add 2018 American Community Survey to the “source” and the link to the data site. https://www1.nyc.gov/site/planning/planning-level/nyc-population/american-community-survey.page

Step #12: Go to “Customize tooltips” and click in the header box. Delete the Neighborhood Code and instead click on {{ Geog_Name }}

Step #13: Click in the second box add Foreign Born: before the code for the number.

Step #14: Go to Publish and Embed. Click on Publish. Paste the link in the assignments.
