Inspired by one man’s delirious Saharan walkabout, the 150-mile “Marathon of the Sands” has grown into a footrace of epic proportions. Altogether 595 top athletes, adventurers and masochists from 28 countries competed in the 14th annual Marathon des Sables. Myself and my Candide colleagues equipped and trained a 14-person field team to cover the week-long event, and planned all aspects of the location production. In the field, Candide producers and technicians worked with Quokka Sports personnel to deliver a constant stream of thousands of media assets, including photographs, articles, audio, video and global positioning data.
